July 11 Louisville Pulling for Colorado

Louisville, North Open Space. Participants meet at Keith Helart Park, off of Monarch Court

 

The Open Space Division was awarded funding for weed control efforts for Canada thistle, and other noxious weed species, by the Colorado Department of Agriculture (CDA) in 2015. This volunteer event is made possible through this funding to help curtail this invasive species that is growing abundantly on North Open Space. Come and learn why noxious weed management is important during weed identification training from 9-9:30 am and then help clip seed heads and dig up noxious weeds that are threatening North Open Space. Refreshments and snacks will be provided. Please bring gloves and be prepared for the elements (bring sunscreen, pants, hat, sunglasses, NO open-toed shoes).

Pulling for Colorado at Bear Creek Lake Park

We will be pulling and learning about noxious weeds at the Bear Creek Lake Park visitor center.  This will be the fifth year we have pulled weeds at the visitor center and the area is looking really good.  Afterwards there will be a cool snack for all who helped out.

July 13 Weed Rodeo Native & Noxious Plant ID Tour & Weed Pull

Please join us at CSU Extension Arboretum and Demonstration Gardens for a morning of learning native & noxious plant identification and pulling a few weeds! Pull at least one bag of weeds in the gardens and receive a Pulling for Colorado prize! We will meet at 8:00 am in front of Colorado State University Extension building at 2775 Highway 50, Grand Junction, CO 81503 (west end of Mesa County Fairgrounds parking lot). Drinks & snacks & weed bags & gloves will be provided but bring your own hat (& own gloves if you have them)!

July 17 3rd Annual Ann Henson Weed Pull

In honor of our dear friend and fellow weed warrior, please join us on Friday, July 17th from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm at beautiful Button Rock Preserve for a day of noxious weed education and pulling. This third annual event is also part of the statewide campaign, Pulling for Colorado. The day will begin with noxious weed identification training. Afterwards, we will join together to pull noxious weeds that are threatening the Button Rock Preserve.

Estes Park Weed Roundup 2015

Estes Park Weed Drop-off, 666 Elm Road, above the Town Recycle Center

 

The Estes Land Stewardship Association (ELSA) Weed Roundup will have informational booths staffed by ELSA members and Master Gardeners. These volunteers will hand out the 2015 weed booklet Fourteen Most Unwanted Weeds in the Estes Valley and other detailed weed identification and management guides. With freshly potted examples on hand, staff will help participants learn to identify unwanted weeds.

 

Participants will be invited to drop off paper bags of noxious weeds pulled throughout the Estes Valley for disposal. Door prizes and refreshments will be available, and prizes will be awarded for Most Weeds Pulled and for Largest Weed Pulled.

July 18 2nd Annual Fremont County Invasive Plant Contest

This contest is an attempt to increase awareness and knowledge about invasive plants that have a negative impact in Colorado.  This contest is designed to teach participants about the fundamentals and importance of Invasive Plant Management.   

 

References for the contest are;
1) Guideline for Weed Management Plans for Fremont & Custer Counties, and
2) the Weed Management Preference Chart.  Please visit www.fremontco.com (click on Department tab/Weed Control/ Invasive Plant Challenge) or www.fremontcd.org to get copies of these two references. 

 

The contest will be judged solely on information in these two reference guides.  Printed copies can be obtained at Fremont Conservation District, 248 Dozier Avenue, Canon City, CO.

 

Contest
The Plant Challenge is being combined with the Golf Tournament on July 18, 2015.  You do not have to be registered in the Golf Tournament to compete in the Plant Challenge.  Contestants not entered in the Golf Tournament will be provided transportation to go from site to site.

Part I:  Noxious Weed Identification – There will be designated sites along the Golf Course for weed identification.
Part II:  Individual Invasive Plant Management Plan - Contestants will write an integrated pest management plan to control each invasive species observed at the site(s).  Management information will come from pages 4-33 of the Guideline for Weed Management Plans for Fremont & Custer Counties and the Weed Management Preference Chart.

 

General Rules and Guidelines

  1. Contest will be divided into two Divisions. Each Division will have a Team Score and Individual Score.
  2. Team will consist of four (4) individuals. 
  3. Individuals who would like to compete, but not as a team member.
  4. Entries must be submitted to:  Tommy Covington, 615 Macon Ave., LL10, Cañon City, CO  81212 on an official entry form by June 19, 2015.
  5. Contestants will work independently.
  6. Individual awards will be given for the cumulative scores attained on Part I and Part II.
  7. Team scores will consist of the combined scores of designated team members individual scores.
  8. Judges will be comprised of:  Fremont County Weed Board Chairman, J.R. Phillips and two (2) others TBD.  The decision of the judges shall be final and not subject to review or appeal.
  9. Awards will be cash only, amounts to be determined after registration.  Awards will be for First, Secord and Third Place in each division.

Entry fees:       
Plant Challenge Individual  - $25.00 which includes lunch, transportation, materials and t-shirt (put size on entry form)
Plant Challenge Team of 4 - $100.00 which includes lunch, transportation, materials and t-shirt (put sizes on entry form)
Golf Tournament - $60 per player.

Day of Contest:
